New Doctor Who Star Announced 2009/1/6 10:19:51

The new star of Doctor Who has been found and it's Matt Smith. If you're saying "Matt who?" then you're not alone, as Smith is a relative unknown, with just a few TV credits, including the British series Party Animals.

Smith is 26, making him the youngest actor to ever play The Doctor. The BBC One Doctor Who Confidential revealed the casting on Saturday, with both Smith and David Tennant, who Smith will be replacing, speaking about the transition. Said Smith, "I feel proud and honored to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling. David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him."

Tennant is about to begin filming four Doctor Who specials, which will be broadcast through the next year. Smith will then take over for the next full season of Doctor Who, which will air in 2010. Doctor Who will also see a change behind the scenes, as Steven Moffatt takes over as showrunner for the departing Russell T. Davies.

Despite only having a few previous TV roles, Smith has managed to work several times with Doctor Who alum Billie Piper, including his debut, The Ruby in the Smoke, plus The Shadow in the North and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
