New Doctor Who Spoilers 2008/12/31 15:10:06

We've been speculating about this year's Doctor Who Christmas special for months.

But after yesterday's special screening, we can finally reveal a few hints about what's in store on Christmas Day - and there's some juicy gossip to boot.

Ten Time Lords
In a series first, all ten former time lords will appear in The Next Doctor, but we can't reveal how, when or why.

We do know that producers had to trawl through old footage of deceased actors William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, to find suitable shots for the scene. Show boss Russell T. Davies said: "It's nice for fans to see the old doctors. And it helps kids get their heads round the fact there have been lots of them."

The 'Other' Doctor
It has been assumed that the 'other' Doctor, played brilliantly by David Morrissey, is a future incarnation of the Time Lord. But what's strange is to see him firmly rooted in the past complete with Tethered Arial Release Developed In Style (or Tardis to us ordinary folk), antiquated sonic screwdriver, a fob watch, and no memory of... well, anything at all really.

One crucial scene sees the Doctor attempt to explain the succession of Time Lords to his counterpart, while teasing the audience by telling him: "Maybe you're the next Doctor, or the next but one."

David TennantA Scary Cyber Threat
The Doctor faces his most dangerous enemy yet as he comes up against the Cyber King, and Dervla Kirwan's Miss Hartigan is no picnic either.

Miss Hartigan, a workhouse matron is working with the Cybermen to try to spark her own Industrial Revolution, and - this being Victorian London and all - children play a major part in her plans, and not in a fun, family way.

Strange new monsters the Cybershades also appear - complete with the face of a Cyberman and the body and brain of a dog. It sounds creepy, and it is.

Tennant In Trouble?
David Tennant's recent back surgery has caused speculation that the actor won't be fit to reprise the role when filming starts in January, but the show's executive producer, Russell T. Davies, said he was "hopeful" shooting would start as planned.

"We'll have to be very careful," he said. "I don't think we'll be swinging him on a wire on his first day back."

Russell T DaviesRussell T. Davies Is Gagged
Russell claims he is being "kept out of the loop" as BBC bosses search for David Tennant's replacement, and admitted he doesn't have a clue who might play the next Doctor. "They're not telling me," said Russell: "I'm being kept in the dark in case I spill the beans - and I don't blame them."

But he did re-iterate his wish to see a woman in the role, naming Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lesley Sharp as his favourites saying: "I think the more it's talked about, the more likely it is to happen." The writer also discussed the impact the role can have on an actor's life: "It's a big deal to set up. Whoever becomes the Doctor has got to take on a whole life. It's a lot of soul-searching to do."

When asked about 2009's scheduled episodes, Russell confirmed that the Doctor will be without a permanent companion, and hinted: "We'll be filming abroad. It's going to be exotic and we've got a great guest star."
