Megamind Tops First Weekend of Holiday Box Office 2010/11/8 9:54:20

A trio of newcomers — Megamind, Due Date and For Colored Girls — combined to make for the highest-grossing holiday season start ever, 30 percent higher than the same weekend last year, Box Office Mojo reports.

Movies over the weekend brought in some $47.7 million on about 7,300 screens.

The animated superhero film Megamind topped new releases, raking in more than $47 million in its first week. Due Date, the latest comedy from The Hangover director Todd Phillips, drew $33.5 million in its debut. Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls, starring Janet Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg, attracted $20.1 million and came in third.

The action flick Red, starring Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren, came in fourth with $8.9 million, while last week's No. 1 film, Saw 3D, took in $8.2 million to finish fifth.

Rounding out the top 10: Paranormal Activity 2 (No. 6, $7.3 million); Jackass 3D (No. 7, $5 million); Hereafter (No. 8, $4 million); Secretariat  (No. 9, $4 million) and The Social Network (No. 10, $3.6 million).
