Can 'The Office' Survive Without Steve Carell 2010/7/8 9:47:11

After seven years of playing bumbling boss Michael Scott on NBC’s hit sitcom The Office, Steve Carell recently announced that this would be his final season on the show. Fan reactions have ranged from relief that the series will be ending sooner than later to anger that NBC would even consider an Office without his character. Starpulse weighs in on fan opinions and predicts the future of the show.

The U.S. version of The Office, adapted from the BBC series of the same name, has always focused on the misgivings and mistrials of the oddly loveable and despicable Michael Scott. Although the other characters have side plotlines, each episode mainly revolves around Scott’s mistakes, social taboos, hair-brained schemes and poor management skills, which his employees then have to deal with the best they can.

Many are wondering what kind of format the show will take if the Michael Scott isn't there to rile things up. Asked by MTV news about his decision to not renew his contract, Carell explains: “'I just felt like it was time, and I think it might actually be a good thing for the show, too. You switch around the dynamic of a show like that, I think it can be a really good thing and infuse it with a different energy.”

Fan Sophie N., a student in San Franciso, thinks that Carell’s exit will have a negative effect on the show: “The awkwardness of Michael Scott is sometimes overwhelming, and his actions are unfathomable and uncomfortable. But his co-workers are built around it. And while they can have separate identities, they’re united by their horror of his behavior.”
