Bones: Lock down Drag out 2011/8/24 2:30:18

Hart Hanson sure made a statement on Bones last night. In "The Proof in the Pudding," The Jeffersonian Team faced a compromising challenge. A group of mysterious government agents placed the lab on lockdown, citing "patriotism" as the team's only incentive to complete an urgent task: determining the cause of death for a set of top-secret bones without leaving the lab or identifying the remains. The questions (What authority do the agents have? Why must the lab be locked? Who do the remains belong to?) only escalated once the team hypothesized that they were examining the bones of Former President John F. Kennedy—but it was Booth (David Boreanaz) doing all the asking.

Booth's issues with this case dug far deeper than those of the rest of the team. He felt he had been excluded intentionally from the case, but also felt he was obligated to enter the lab by force and risk his FBI badge to protect the Jeffersonian team. And once he began to ask questions (Who ordered the investigation? Why re-examine the Bones? What exactly happened on November 22, 1963?), the contradictions worsened. As a member of the FBI, Booth had placed his trust and loyalty in the government he was serving, but the idea that the same government may have hidden information about the death of a President was too much for him to handle. He went from being supremely confident in the Jeffersonian team's findings to being completely ashamed of his career path. Of course, Bones (Emily Deschanel) went the extra mile to settle his mind and prove that the remains were not, in fact, Kennedy's. But the seed of doubt has now been planted in Booth's head.

It'll be interesting to see if Hanson takes this character development—and this statement about the government's contradictory nature—and runs with it. Booth's blind faith in the government has always been prominent, but up until this point it hasn't been a flaw. Now that he's found a reason to question the legitimacy of the government, he might question his job, his life, his relationship with Bones. Let's hope he questions why they haven't hooked up yet.
