Paris Hilton is under investigation by South African police after she was allegedly caught smoking marijuana at a World Cup soccer game, according to online reports.

The socialite flew into South Africa to join in the World Cup festivities on Wednesday.

But she is already rumored to have landed in trouble, with local news agencies claiming she was taken into custody on Friday after cops spotted her puffing on a joint during the quarter final match between the Netherlands and Brazil at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

A blogger for Eyewitness News (EWN) in South Africa writes on the network's Twitter page, "EWN can officially confirm that socialite Paris Hilton has been arrested on a drug related charge and will appear in court later tonight."

Dispatch Online reports Hilton was escorted by officers from the grounds to a police station in St Croix just before 8pm local time.

Mark Magadlela, the Provincial Head of Detectives in Port Elizabeth, has confirmed Hilton's presence at the police station but claims she has since been released.
